If you wind

up with a window and sun I’ll get you
something that never dies; it’s part
of this conversation we’re conceiving—

no initials, only terminals, where nobody
looks until they need to. How many out-
sized ’50s-cartoon kisses popped up there,

not the ones the papers are buzzing about
and never on a dare. There was a dictionary
on my lap and a word you wanted but

it was too much. If we’re lucky we will
find shame and collaborations and even
more fruitful collaborations and lack

of discretion and dead lobsters strewn
across fields to make the crops grow.
One thing usually true about history,

it’s embarrassing. And by which I mean
I’ve written another letter to you in my sleep
about the time I almost managed to swim,

fully clothed, across the blacked-out bay. I want
it lush all around and so long as bigger trees
make me dizzy, I will find you but not today.

Nothing heals me of a sore and angry heart like a walk through the very city I often feel denying me. To see in the street the fifty different ways people struggle to remain human until the very last minute — the variety and inventiveness of survival technique — is to feel the pressure relieved, the overflow draining off. I join the anxiety. I share the condition. I feel in my nerve endings the common refusal to go under. Never am I less alone than alone in the crowded street. Alone, I imagine myself. Alone, I buy time. Me, and everyone I know. Me, and all the New York friends.

Considered by authorities as much preferable to the craze of the previous year, phonebooth stuffing, people hunkered for hours at a time on car roofs, in phone booths and wherever people gathered.Life referred to it as “sociable squatting.” Different styles of hunkerin’ were reported as “sophisticates” tended to hunker flatfooted while other hunkered with their elbows inside the knees.

Reasons for the popularity of hunkerin’ included the ability for large groups of people to participate together peacefully to discuss issues such as politics or sport. When asked about the popularity of hunkerin’, one hunkerer said hunkerin’ was

“A respite from a world of turmoil. The main purpose of hunkerin’ is to get down and hunker together. It’s a friendship thing: get your friends to hunker with you. The man you don’t know is the man you haven’t hunkered with.”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest contributions by the state of Arkansas to the American way of life.

In 1959, fraternity brothers at the University of Arkansas were suffering from a shortage of chairs. In protest, they took to “hunkering,” or squatting. It’s a fine example of American ingenuity, of making do with less, or in this case, making do with nothing at all.

Hunkering quickly became a fad that spread to other Southern campuses, warranting coverage in Time magazine, where the Southern squatters showed themselves fine examples of collegiate style.

As in yoga, there were different names depending on what you were doing while hunkering. According to Time, squatting while drinking beer is called Hunkerin’ and Hookin’. Time does not disclose the term for hunkering while eliminating beer.

When studying, it’s called the Horace Hunker. Cigarette-smoking piano players did the Hoagy Hunker. And a really nice one, on dates, it’s the 35-cent Hamburger Hunker:
